There’s a lot more to starting a new team than filling out the lineup card, finding some teammates and remembering where your games are.
If you’re thinking of starting a team on your own, here are a few tips before jumping in.
It’s not as much work as you might think and of course, RosterBot helps too ;), but managing your own rec team can be a ton of fun and start friendships that last a lifetime, but only if you get things started on the right foot.
1. Pick Your Sport
This might seem like an obvious point, but before you go ahead and start your own Polo team, you might want consider things like, “do I actually know how to play Polo?” or “do I own a horse?” or “How much money is this going to cost me?” before starting your own team.
Great sports to start out with are slow-pitch softball, soccer, ultimate frisbee or if you are interested in browsing the sports catalog, try multi-sport.
2. Find People To Play With
Playing on a team with your friends is great, but it’s not always simple starting a new squad with your buds. They may not play the sport you are interested in, or you just moved to a new city and don’t know a lot of people yet, or maybe you are looking to start a new sport this year.
Getting together with a group of people who like playing the same sport as you is a great way to start new friendships.
Who couldn’t like the person who sets them up for that game winning goal? Instant buddy!
3. Get Some Gear
Some sports don’t require a lot of equipment, and depending your league, your team may not need to bring gear for each game. But even the most accommodating league is probably not going to set you up with footwear, jerseys or other necessities like water-bottles.
Start digging through your garage, you might have some old equipment buried in there. Or ask friends or family for their old stuff. Or better yet, ask your friends and family to dig around your garage.
If you are brand-new to a sport, dropping hundreds of dollars on top-0f-the-line equipment isn’t the best idea; instead find some used equipment to start off with.
Consignment sports stores are a treasure trove of equipment. You can find everything from baseball bats and gloves to start your softball team off with, to broken-in hockey gear, or soccer balls.
4. Pick A Team Name
Selecting your team’s name is one of, if not the most, important decisions you will make and you being the organizer means you get the final say, so make sure it’s a good one.
There are several components to consider when picking your team’s handle: Originality, humour, taste and intimidation factor (or lack thereof).
Remember your team’s name can be up for sale to local sponsors. Local pubs and businesses are often more than happy to drop a few hundred dollars for advertising on your jersey’s.
5. Organize Your Schedule

6. Get Some Practice In
Yes, Allen, we are. And chances are your team may need a little.

7. Everyone Shows Up
With your fresh jerseys, a couple of practices under your belt and hopefully a snazzy/intimidating/confusing team name your opponents will be wondering what sort of squad they are facing.
And if things start going downhill in a hurry, don’t sweat it – this isn’t Game 7 of the World Series/Stanley Cup/Super Bowl.
